In Coastline: Aerial View 2 the viewer is seemingly transported to the air, from which he or she can gaze down upon a town, but the scene is not neatly arranged like ordinary aerial photos, but full of fragmentary objects and childlike pencil lines. The artist You Ting-Chun once taught at Ruibin Elementary School in Ruifang, an experience she has preserved through her artworks. Every detail in this work relates to a memory: she draws this surrounded by mountains and sea campus as if one looks down from where the students live. Using color pencil on special rice paper with grid lines, she used simple, naïve lines to draw the school buildings and playground. The floral cloth collage in the lower left corner was inspired by the bright clothes often worn by the schoolchildren. The artist thus reproduces her cherished memories through the accumulation of all these creative elements.
