Does seeing this work make you want to reach out and flip the switch? The artist Tseng Shu-Fen uses dull gray acrylic shades to simulate the texture and color of old, worn electrical appliances. She carried out various experiments with brushwork and media and finally created a special technique to make the image as three-dimensional as possible. Therefore, when the work is hung on the gallery wall, it seems to be an actual object in the space, rather than a piece of art on display. By producing a work of art that is difficult to distinguish from what it represents, Tseng prompts the viewer to reflect on the virtuality or reality of the work. Meanwhile, the word “switch” also connotes something that turns a behavior on or off in the viewer.
