City Color, Melbourne: Balanced Gray

As an artist, Chia Chien-Ju characteristically reflects life through collections of ready-made objects. Her City Color, Melbourne: Balanced Gray was created when she was an artist-in-residence in Melbourne. There, everything from art gallery walls to supermarket plastic bags seemed gray, so she began to focus on exploring the meaning and location of Melbourne’s gray, which she named “balanced gray.” In addition, she collected the colors seen at local stores and institutions—the post office, the telecom utility, OTB outlets, banks, stationery shops, wholesale outlets, and so on—plus a brochure introducing Melbourne’s characteristic sites. Then she sampled the yellow-green, blue, red, purple, and green colors as well as the local 7-Eleven stores’ three-stroke logo, and juxtaposed them with a typical Melbourne gray. Through her unique perspective, she unifies her visual memory of Melbourne.
