In this painting, blue-green light and shadow and overlapping leaf images present a clear yet hazy atmosphere. Lin Cheng-Yen’s “Reflection・Impression” series uses light-hued oil paint to depict layers upon layers of leaves, making viewers feel as if they are in a trance, looking up at the leaf silhouettes in the sunlight. Although the lines of each leaf are so clear, the atmosphere is misty and elusive. Lin uses ordinary images of things seen every day and blends them with imagination in order to arrive at a special interpretation of them. Human beings always rely on impressions to understand things. The leaves that appear here, for example, appear in large numbers, so people will see them, but they may not be able to describe the details. Although one’s memory can err, what is seen through the eyes might not always be true. Perhaps the ambiguous impression in the mind has become an established reality.
