Tsai Yun-Ju’s Comma originates from the kind of emotional sorting-out that takes place during the process of growing up. Having grown up in a big family, complex and ambiguous interpersonal relationships became a part of her life, and it also become the core nutrients of her creations. The balloon arch in the center of the painting suggests celebration, and the background is composed of many layers of color, with a complex texture and deep, rich feeling. Under the balloon arch, there are several balloons scattered on the ground, as well as two black humanoid figures. There is the ambiguous atmosphere of a party coming to an end, or a situation in which things are left unresolved. Tsai believes that painting is the compression of a certain moment, condensed on the canvas, so that it is like a brief pause or a comma—the event depicted, the figures, and the images do not just end here, but can go on and develop. The arch here is both an exit and an entrance. Each viewer can follow their imaginations and feelings to extend what is depicted.
