“Forest of Magic Trees” is a series of works by the artist Hsu Cheng-Ta. His paintings always focus on flowers, birds, and nature, especially on elements with auspicious significance in Oriental cultures, such as peonies, which symbolize wealth and glory, red-crowned cranes, which symbolize hermits, and goldfish, which are supposed to attract wealth, and so on. At the center of Forest of Magic Trees – Listen, a pair of colorful birds appear to engage in a little romantic cooing. They show the tranquil harmony that one can find among animals and plants in nature. The lines of the birds’ feathers are delicately traced, and Hsu uses both acrylic and modeling paste to layer the feathers for a semi-three-dimensional effect. The exaggerated curve of the branches imbues the entire painting with a magical sense, while the cold blue background, which heightens the pure, magical atmosphere, is derived from the blue of blue-and-white porcelain.
