Artist Lin Wen-Bin’s “Autumn Leaf Scene” series comes from the attention he pays to small things. Once when he was walking down a street, he picked up a few fallen leaves and examined them closely. He found that over time their appearance changes constantly, and their colors were quite alluring. Dead leaves are ready symbols for change in the natural world, so the artist tried to connect his own life experiences with them. Here he has arranged them into a kind of “landscape” and rendered them with almost microscopic detail, but the composition also resembles that of a classical, realistic still life painting. The white background brings visual focus on the subject, and he used the transparent and opaque properties of oil paint when applying it repeatedly in many thin layers, so as to present the dead leaves in all their fine detail. Subtle gradations of green to yellow tints also bring out the signs of time’s passage on the leaves, fully expressing the artist’s thoughts on time’s effects on things.
