Do you feel that the 14 radially arranged geometric forms are somehow moving towards us? In Unfolding, the artist Pan Hsien-Jen uses the rules of perspective rigorously in creating a three-dimensional sense of space on a flat plane. The white rectangle in the center suggests the “rear” of the implied space. Pan Hsien-Jen used rigorously precise painting technique to heighten the composition’s visual effect. First, he mixed ink and acrylic to make thin layers on the canvas, then applied light greens or browns on the radiating rectangles, using tape to frame the borders and creating neat, precise lines. The rational structure and gradual color progressions right and left create a “flipping” visual effect and leave a deep impression on the mind.
