Tunnel is the first of the artist Xiao Qi-Heng’s 2021 “New New World” series. Every time he drives through a tunnel, he always looks forward to what he will see after passing through, so this kind of “desire to explore the mysterious” has become the motivation for the creation of this series. Tunnel draws the winding appearance of the entire tunnel from the perspective of a bystander, rather than from a single linear perspective, and there is more than one exit, which means that it will lead to different places. Meanwhile, Xiao added his experience with fitness training to his work. He used pencils and charcoal pencils, which are often used for drawing plaster sculptures of human forms, to bring out the kinds of texture and line that appear on human organs and muscle tissue after body building. Furthermore, the details are more visible because of the black-and-white presentation.
