作品賞析
In his Wandering Memory, Cheng Chih-Hsuan presents the scenery he sees as he drives his motorcycle on his daily commute, using a narrative method in a horizontal format. He is influenced by the storytelling technique found in comic books, and expresses the changing perspectives of the city moving past him using the static medium of watercolor landscape painting. There is the asphalt pavement, with its painted lines, that he sees when looking down, and there are also the buildings he sees when he looks up. White spaces and blurred images represent speed—some details cannot be seen clearly as he goes on his journey. Likewise, each viewer will bring different perspectives to the painting and see different things in their imaginations as they contemplate it. For Cheng Chih-Hsuan, his commute is a cycle because both the route and the time are fixed. He keeps a diary in the form of images and records his regular itinerary. His works are mainly white, gray, and black, and he explains that “seeing the same thing every day” gradually numbs his vision, so that the scenery along his route is no longer vivid.
