In Leave Me, Come Closer to Me by the Taitung artist Chang Liang-Jui, the vast scenery of the coast and the cold turnstile scene in the foreground are juxtaposed. The swaying dandelions, their seeds blowing in the wind, allude to the fact that the elderly generation remain in the local villages, while their children have scattered elsewhere to seek opportunity. The turnstiles meanwhile seem to be sentient, as if they are officials charged with the task of heartlessly sending the children on their way. Meanwhile, we see stingrays out of their familiar element in the ocean and roaming about in the sky—another metaphorical projection of the situation, including the artist. Chang Liang-jui uses the surrealist techniques and metaphor-rich images to depict the mental state of people who have left their homes and to reinterpret the relationship between nature and the man-made world, which seem to be at complete odds but are in fact closely interdependent. Through his compositions, he constructs the fields where they coexist and can find a balance.
