Currently trends emphasize healthy eating, but here we see slabs of bacon, which represents the traditional Chinese New Year with its wonderful aroma, hanging high in an old grocery store. The store looks shabby, and it is deserted and lonely. Such a scene inspired Hung Chun-Ming, who had been searching for childhood memories in the modern urban landscape, to create this Monologue. With his solid foundation in drawing and layering in oil painting, as well as his past experience in graphic design, Hung keeps the background of his works in simple tonalities, but they are full of detail. The bacon slabs and the light bulb, which provides the sole light source, are full of color and vivid contrast. They focus the viewer’s attention on the main subject, which will then bring to mind the salty, fragrant smell of the bacon and childhood memories of joyous, lively New Year celebrations. These rich savory associations, which belong to the impoverished era of the past, are called up vividly on the paper, telling stories from history and bearing the imprint of our time.
