Artist Huang Shih-Lun is adept at expressing his reflections on creation and life through the works he produces. Inspired by the Sisyphus story in Greek mythology, he believes that “creation” is like continuously pushing a boulder up a mountain—it exercises the body, mind, and will, and it is an eternal subject in life. This work, Night Whisperer, uses the image of the Chinese Taihu rock, but through his brushstrokes he enhances the image, making it seem to be an immense rock deeply worn by harsh climate. However, scattered through the picture, the fine foil will shine under the light, thus subtly increasing the visual dynamics. It becomes more like starlight in a dark night, which helps people to navigate and see hope in darkness. With the weathered boulder and faintly shining foil, Huang presents his insights on life and an in-depth dialogue with a spiritual landscape.
