“In my childhood memories, my home was often flooded, and sometimes the water flooded over the window sill. I would fold a paper boat, watch it float out, and imagine traveling away with it.” This is one of the artist Chou Yung-Chung’s childhood memories about water and his home. In later life, the theme of “water” followed him like fate, so that almost all of his works are inseparable from water. He is quite aware that water can both create life and drown it. In this picture, the roof of the flooded house has already disappeared, and three chairs are stacked on one of the remaining walls. An image of the artist’s younger brother is placed on top of the chairs, looking at the viewers as if ready to plead for help. The seemingly balanced scene is actually full of uneasiness, as if just a little change might cause everything to collapse in the next second. The “Variable” series of works deliberately create an atmosphere of tension and anxiety. Images of dilapidated houses and flooded homes are the artist’s memories of how the illusion of home was lost.
