Artist Li Yu-Chi, who works mainly in photography and video, has traveled far and wide to deserts, mountains, deep seas, and underground caverns, and by photographing and recording these natural landscapes, she explores the world and learns more about herself as she attempts to unearth the sources of human emotions. The Milk was shot in a karst cave in 2019. It was so dark and quiet there that she felt time stop still, and everything seemed to lose its vitality. Then she found a small stalactite, which, unlike the others, was obviously still slowly and steadily growing, despite it being in such a seemingly inorganic space. She thought it was very much like the unsculpted nature of humankind in its beginnings—primitive and simple, but full of possibilities—or a kind of metaphor for the world’s unseen principles of order.
