The creative concept behind Where Do You Come From? comes from the artist Hong Jun-Yuan’s growing experiences. Because his family often relocated, whenever he is asked where he comes from, he never knows how to explain where exactly his hometown is. Starting from his own experience, he expands to consider different issues in society and politics. In Where Do You Come From?, he worked hand-in-hand with actors who had similar experiences to his, and they shot the video in old military bases and prisons for political prisoners. Through the symbolism in the video, there is the reenactment of a trial scene in the trial of Li Shike, a veteran who committed Taiwan’s first armed bank robbery in the 1980s. The plot begins with a Polaroid photo. It is like looking back in order to find one’s own past and explore everyone else’s. At the end, a recording of the police announcement of the solution of the crime also reveals humanity issues behind the visual aesthetics.
