The artist Chiu Huai-Hsuan has long used wood as a medium for her creations. Besides collecting all kinds of wood, she recuts and assembles it into bookcases, desks, and chairs, and then she uses power devices that will move various things in order to vividly express memories and stories. In Read after Cutting—A Tree-Planting Project (Dragon Juniper), she collected scrap wood from a furniture factory and made it into a small bookcase. The various books on the shelves all retain the original colors of their wood. The power device simulates the action of pulling books off the shelf to create a multi-sensory experience of sight, smell, and hearing. Chiu Huai-Hsuan’s work transforms trees’ growth environment, explores the symbiotic relationship between creators and materials, and also switches the viewing audience’s viewing horizons, from life to nature and from self to world. Thus a small bookcase carries the audience’s stories in time and accommodates their memories of trees and nature.
