The artist Chiu Te-Cheng’s frame-by-frame animation, ASYNC:KING, is a self-portrait at its core, and it expresses his desire and aspirations to become an artist. He believes that his mission as an artist is to redefine Taiwan’s culture, but when he reflects on his relationship with Taiwan, he often feels alienated, since his preferences and education are deeply influenced by Western culture. In the animation, he chooses to represent himself with the symbol of an astronaut, as if he were traveling afar to explore the unknown universe. The many scintillating screens in the animated scenes reflect his persistence and yearning to become an artist. He becomes one only after he shows his inner thoughts before the eyes of the community, the media, and the public. The crowns that keep falling around the astronaut represent how the target for the artist’s creations are other people, not himself, and that his goal in creating things is to have a positive influence on others.
