Ink painting is an art form unique to the East and has a deep tradition and history. It is not only a medium, but also the presentation of a philosophy and worldview. The artist Chang Tien-Chien, who received instruction in the art of traditional ink painting during his student days, has absorbed the salutary influences of the tradition in art history and by focusing on natural things, combining tradition with his thoughts on modern life, and tracing his inner emotions and thoughts, has established his own unique style in his chosen medium. Chang’s Spring Day takes as its theme the spring revival and sprouting of all living things. It transforms the natural scenery into an imaginary mental space, but avoids bright colors and busy expression in favor of calm tones and sparse but varied lines in its depiction of flowers blooming in the mountains. The flowers in the foreground are layered with linear brushstrokes, and the mountains behind are done with light ink washes. The scene is full of the gentle, elegant literati style.
