Hsu Wei-Ying’s Green Maple has the charm of an Oriental painting and creates a complex scene filled with contradictions. In this painting, natural and manmade things are everywhere: a woman with a plain but elegant dress, with a bird’s nest on her head, hidden behind the trunk of a maple tree. These conflicting symbols are blended in the woman’s form, creating a sense of incongruity. In this seemingly ordinary figured scene, the woman is painted with meticulous, soft brushwork, while the maple tree, in sharp contrast, is silk-screen printed in gold pigment and gives a flat, cool effect. The handling of the white space and the floating maple seeds extend the sense of depth in the space, creating a varied, heterogeneous visual experience. Hsu Wei-Ying combines different media to subtly express the relationship between humankind and nature—they coexist, yet are strangers to each other—and this is thought-provoking.
