Chiou Shin-Jiun’s creative endeavors are mainly graphic, and he uses point-drawing techniques to depict the imaginary worlds in his mind. In Chiou’s works, one often sees unfamiliar shapes made up of thick black dots and several circular halos made with gold foil. He uses fantasy and distinctive compositional forms to express the mysterious, unknowable worlds of his imagination. This work comes from Chiou’s “Cosmic Consciousness” series, made up of the three basic elements of visual space—points, lines, and surfaces—depicting a world in his imagination beyond conceivable dimensionality. The work shows an unfamiliar shape extending vertically and mysterious golden circles of light. The symmetry and organic lines suggest a kind of indescribable creature. Through his work, Chiou attempts to realize the existence of unknown worlds, and by repetitive, ritualistic abstract forms expresses his thoughts about religion, the universe, time and space.
