作品賞析
Lee Jo-Mei’s creations come mainly from felt life experience. She uses different techniques and media to record, reorganize, and transform these experiences, so that things we consider ordinary are changed—they break away from their original order as the artist shapes the possibility that they may be seen afresh. One winter evening, Lee saw two royal palm trees on a campus near her home, and the shadows they cast on the exterior wall of a nearby building was what inspired her to start planning for her “Landscape Remains” series of works. Through sketches, drawings, and three-dimensional sculptures, with paper as the main medium, she made a series of royal palm fronds. This frond, made with pencil, charcoal stylus, and watercolor paper, is full of the traces of repeated drawing, so that it seems a kind of imagination and simulation of something from the past. It exists somewhere between a specimen and a sketch, and is placed in an ambiguous position, so that it can speak of memories and time’s passage.
