作品賞析
The artist Chen Jia-Yun uses marble as her main creative medium and combines other composite materials to construct sculptures that are both figurative and abstract. Mary II was inspired from the artist’s childhood memories of the cute, well-behaved appearance of circus elephants during performances. However, in real life, circus elephants were often abused and treated inhumanely in order to train them to do postures and movements that do not conform to the animals’ nature. On investigation, she found news of such an elephant, named Mary, that had been abused this way. Chen associated this also to person-to-person bullying. She incorporated her feelings about bullying and abuse into her creation. The gray part on the top of the work resembles the trunk of an elephant, but it is bound to the rusty stone below, expressing her worries about abuse and other violence.
