In this work, Towards, the artist Liu Shu-Yu takes the scene of the aftermath of a factory fire to reflect on the state of urban development. In this print, you can see a group of dark things with complex structures—these are steel bars and iron sheets that have melted together after the fire. The artist has deliberately placed the detritus against an all-white background to highlight and magnify the importance of these objects. They represent the dilapidated scenes that we see in everyday city life, but ignore. Liu Shu-Yu observes that in urban development, people will choose to sacrifice and eliminate certain things in order to build a better and more comfortable environment, but during the process when the new replaces the old, the scene is always chaotic and broken. She purposefully named the work Towards, a word full of positive hope for the future, to highlight the various contradictions in the process of urban development.
