As an artist, Huang De-Cheng makes good use of the unique textural qualities of printmaking to present rich visual effects. He has tried all kinds of printmaking techniques and media, including woodblock prints and metal etching. His Timely Rain continues the feeling of “emptiness” that his work has paid attention to in recent years, with a focus on magnificent scenery and vast spaces, to express his impressions of the environment. The upper half of the composition is densely packed with raindrops of varying lengths and thicknesses; the regular geometric figures in the lower half are the earth, and the small gray blocks are dotted with different symbols. Huang brings into full play printmaking’s capability of repeated figures, but even the details here are still full of variation, which brings out the atmosphere of heavy rain and loneliness. Such heavy but timely rain has made the sky gray, but while we are in the midst of it, we can look forward to the moment when the rain passes and the sky clears up.
