One of the artist Huang Yu-Wen’s childhood impressions was becoming very excited whenever she heard the hawker’s cries from a vegetable truck. She would follow her mother and wait as her mother bought vegetables, and perhaps her mother would also bring back a bag of candy or biscuits. She transformed these childhood memories into this heart-warming print before you, entitled Sales Truck. The center of gravity of the grocery truck in the composition is tilted slightly to the right, and we can sense how its space is crammed full with various goods. From a child’s perspective, those plastic bags hung on top were full of magic—since that was where the snacks were. The cartons below are filled with vegetables of various colors. In order to present the texture of the various materials, Huang Yu-Wen used actual plastic bags, cartons, corrugated paper, and so on that she collaged onto plates and printed into the work. She deliberately diluted the colors of the print to make us focus more on the various wonderful textural effects. By using the low chroma, the scene becomes like the image engraved in the mind, and pulls us back to the years of purest childhood.
