Chen Yi-An’s main creative medium is copper engraving. She grew up in a farming family and is quite familiar with the time and effort spent cultivating crops. For her, the creation of copper engravings is the same as cultivating crops, because they require long-term effort and labor, so she is particlarly fond of the production process. This work, Protector, depicts plants that grow freely in nature. The seemingly random brushworks and composition, as well as the beautiful appearance of the gradually withering plants, are actually based on Chen Yi-An’s memory of her sketches. She often sketches her surroundings when traveling, but the various appearances of plants in particular attract her attention. Later on, she develops these sketches into more concrete creations by transferring them to copper engravings. She records what she sees on the fields with which she is so familiar. The crops were like protectors, watching, guarding, and accompanying her as she grew up.
