In My Suitcase, the artist ZHANG Chun-HaoZhang Chun-Hao realistically depicts a cardboard box. One can see that the surface of the box is slightly wrinkled, the corners are a bit caved in, and there is a clear residuum of sealing tape, showing that the box has been well used. As transformed by Zhang’s brush, the old cardboard box symbolizes much more than just packaging—it has also carried the emotions of parting and reluctance. If you look carefully, you will find a fine white line that cuts through the carton near the middle of the picture. The artist has associated this white line with a relative’s funeral service: when burning the relics of the deceased, family members had to hold a string in a protective circle around the relics, to prevent the soul of the deceased from being taken away by demons. It is thus a symbol of protection. The white line appears in many of Zhang’s works, so that, in a way, a connection or dialogue is formed among them.
