CHEN Shang-Peng uses the camera to capture the human landscapes of Taiwanese society. The Traveling Fairies – Taipei MRT Series presents a series of photographs of travelers on MRT cabins and platforms. His observations reveal the basic state of people living in Taipei that always include some sense of happiness. Objects carried by travelers are targets of his photographic documentary, and include bags with cat faces, slippers with cartoon elements, and pink heart-shaped balloons, as though these objects are tiny, clandestine urban fairies traveling across the city. CHEN Shang-Peng adopts a light-hearted perspective in an effort to capture silent happiness in the atmosphere to convey the sense of joy derived from urban life, while highlighting the phenomenon of materialist consumerism of modern times.
