CHEN Chien-Pei generates a wide range of artworks, and often conveys his contemplation and observations of the external environment by using videos, installations, and other forms of artworks. Broken Scenery is part of his My Home, My Land series. The artist performed on-site surveys of military facilities in remote islands of Taiwan in an effort to investigate the issues caused by the defense of sovereignty. These works are presented using overlapping montages of black and white photos taken from these remote islands, creating a metaphor for the complicated historical background of these islands. CHEN Chien-Pei uses the land to investigate the uncertainties of history, complicated definitions of national sovereignty, and the conscious mindsets exposed during times of war.
