LIANG I-Ni’s Kuo Mao Community II is a work that investigates the spatial ecology and memories of urban settlements and clustered buildings. Kuo Mao Community is located in Zuoying District of Kaohsiung and represents a classical community-based architecture developed during the process of urban transformations. LIANG I-Ni combines videos and sounds to display the unique spatial dimensions of the circular building. Ambient sound recordings collected from the actual community to document the routine daily lives of the residents were also included within the work as well. Digital special effects were employed to convert the windows of every household into flickering electronic billboards that change with time while the physical landscapes of the community remain static. Like the basic conditions for human survival described by Beckett in Waiting for Godot, the composition provides a living environment that harmonizes optimism and pessimistic expectations in a world of contradictions.
