CHANG Nai-Wen’s works are based upon the development path of sculptures to reflect upon variations that could be achieved in sculpting. An Accident of Length is a black granite sculpture fashioned into a thorny staff. The dangerous-looking thorns represent a form of self-protection as well as aggression. The overly-stretched form, however, proved to be the greatest weakness and caused the staff to accidentally break in two during the creative process. Despite the abundance of external protection, little can be done to stop accidents or changes. CHANG Nai-Wen uses the form and structure of sculptures as a retrospective inquiry and to initiate internal dialectics on matters relating to the physical external world.
