LIU Shih-Fen is an artist with years of nursing experience in the obstetrics and gynecology surgery department, creating many artworks based on her professional knowledge of pathology to reflect upon life, gender, and desires. In Garden of Mullian’s Ducts-Still Life3, the medical definition for Mullian’s Ducts are the point of origin for the development of male or female reproductive systems in the human embryo. The ducts therefore represent the origin of differences, conflicts, and contradictions. LIU Shih-Fen first illustrated a hallucinogenic plant and then used photographs and digital post-editing, combining the plant with a transparent yet restrictive glass container. A longhorn beetle is perched upon a broken twig within the container, unaware of the means to escape its confinements. By using this artwork, LIU Shih-Fen attempts to respond to our limited knowledge while pointing out the mysterious secrets of the origin of life and existence.
