CHANG San-Hsueh’s “Random State-2” portrays the bed as the main subject. Sketches are created like a daily log to record the different forms of the bed after waking up every day. The sheets and blankets are pressed, and folded to generate random shapes, wrinkles, and patterns. All other distractions and temporal cues were removed, compressing the entire composition against a flat, gray-colored background. Such a painting can be regarded as still life, portrait, sketch, or even a landscape painting. CHANG San-Hsueh treats this series as a work of everyday settings and believes that the bed reflects a person’s unique personality, making the furniture an intimate and private furnishing capable of narrating an emotional prose about its user.
