HUNG Yu-Hsi’s ink paintings contemplate of the means to observe and understand history. The Monument of Century depicts the religious artifacts seemingly unearthed from archeological diggings. Closer inspection reveals that the faces of the idols have been replaced with characters from cartoons and popular games nowadays. What appears to be an archeological memorial stele from the past could come from the future, or just simply be a counterfeit. HUNG Yu-Hsi uses a humorous approach that introduces fictional characters into historical documents and artifacts to deconstruct the didactic form of history while reflecting upon the blurriness of modern interpretations with respect to events and objects.
