Malay Makazuwan is a member of the Pinaski tribe of the Pinuyumayan people. Her works often incorporate the unique cross-stitching techniques and colors of the formal costumes of the Pinuyumayan people to convey the essential cultural elements of her tribe. Malay Makazuwan believes that creation is a series of self-investigation and a response to one’s personal way of life. Weaving the East Coast uses wool stitching techniques to recreate the landscapes of the eastern coast of Taiwan and is combined with driftwood, seeds, and salvaged natural elements. The textures, experiences, and techniques of handicraft were employed to create a link between the artist and the oceans, soil, and tribes, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves in the temperature and aromas of the sea. Malay Makazuwan transforms traditional techniques of her tribal nation into a creative format that conveys her innermost spirituality and personal emotions with regards to her cultural background.
