The culture and lifestyles of the Amis people serve as the creative inspirations for LIOU Mei-Yi’s artworks. Ka’eso comprises 16 pieces of small, porcelain sculptures that convey the maritime culture of the Amis. LIOU Mei-Yi grew up by the sea and shares a close emotional bond with the ocean. ‘Ka’eso’ means appetizing and delicious in the Amis language, and it is also the powerful sensations that the artist wishes to convey through this work. The 16 pieces of porcelain are covered in brilliant colors and irregular outlines and appear like 16 courses of delicious culinary offerings created using sea weed, conches, lobsters, sea shells, and other fresh seafood, as an assemblage symbolizing the ocean. LIOU Mei-Yi’s pottery works convey her passion for her seaside home and the rich and diverse natural ecology of her native island.
