YUAN Zhi-Jie believes that his personal losses could be traced to his parents’ decision to break up. Family Rituals is based upon old family photographs that were re-assembled and re-outlined into a new composition. The photographs record a screenshot of blissful moments, while the truth and reality remain hidden. The artist added texts in the panels not unlike the lessons and mottos provided in temple panel inscriptions. To YUAN Zhi-Jie, a happy family symbolizes the various aspects of life. Everyone hopes to have an intact and loving family, but things often end up differently. Signs similar to those used in Maoshan sorcery are also used to blend fantasies and rituals creating a memory of his own family.
