The ink paintings of HSU Jo-Chun uses the structure and form of trees to convey the phases of human life. Happy Birthday adopts a realist ink painting technique to recreate the intertwining branches and roots. The intertwining branches surround the source of light, serving as a metaphor of a newborn babe in mother’s womb, preparing to break free from its barriers and emerge from its cocoon. Jo-Chun employs the semi-transparent nature of fine linen, overlapping it against rubbing paper to build a multi-layered effect. Special techniques of water washing and flame heating are used upon the rubbing paper to perfectly integrate the creative process with the main theme. HSU Jo-Chun seeks physical and spiritual comfort through paintings, and her works provide a total revelation of her state of mind.
