LIANG Ya-Lun’s photographic composition A Retired Farm Tool seems like a still-life study of farming utensils used for ploughing and working the land, and represents an attempt to find forgotten spiritual values. The overlapping and contrasting light and shadows create a somber and serene atmosphere. Shovels and bamboo grain pans placed in the corner used to be important farming tools and symbolize a farmer’s labor and toils. However, these manual tools have now become a historical relic, having been replaced by machinery. Several bright red petals decorate the work, adding a classical and poetic atmosphere.
