CHANG Yen-Chou’s To the Pureland is a black and white presentation where the might of the ocean is presented as massive, roiling waves that highlighted the dangers of the furious tides. These giant waves dwarf the traveling monk with a backpack attempting to pass through the angry sea. The dark tones of the ocean and frothing waves form a stark contrast against the small yet intrepid monk. By creating a surreal dreamscape in ultra-realist images, CHANG Yen-Chou successfully conveyed the pinnacle of Zen philosophy and meditation.
