CHAUNG Kai-Ping’s watercolor work, Glimmer City – 1, illustrates an ordinary street alley of Taiwan. The rising sun showers the rooftops as rolling metal doors of the residences remain closed with vehicles remain parked outside, showing that the owners are still in bed. But the early risers are already active, hinting at the city’s eventual awakening and the beginning of yet another busy and productive day. This work utilized morning color tones, with light shades being employed for the sky, while the sides of the alleys were created using purple, indigo, and other dark colors. Lighting contrasts create a visual focus that directs the visual space towards the depths of the painting while achieving a carefully balanced harmony.
