KO Chin-Shu’s Awakening is composed of 3 panels. Both the left and right panels used black as the base and then white, green, and other cool tones to create a painting with pastel-like effects. The indoor scenes are dark and isolated, adding to the loneliness and helplessness of the children depicted. The central panel is inspired by the artist’s personal response to the imageries of Japan’s March 11th Earthquake and depicts a child wrapped in clean white sheets standing before the window, while the aluminum door frame has been deliberately arranged to appear like a cross of salvation. Through the child’s lonely and hopeless expressions, KO Chin-Shu hopes to remind viewers on human destruction of the natural world and the need to provide our children with a more sustainable environment.
