LAI Shih-Chao’s eastern gouache, Super City 1029 District, uses fine brushwork and flamboyant colors to interpret the theme of urban space. Urban planning designs and prints were used as the creative inspiration, converted and redirected from a bird’s eye view to observe the urban areas that people live in. Crisscrossing lines cover the entire canvas, dissecting and partitioning areas into different imaginary zones. A collage of brilliant colors was employed to build an illusory world viewed from a unique perspective, allowing viewers to explore this urban fantasy, weaving between different viewing angles that extend into even more possible visages. This collage enriches the work’s visual layering while highlighting the LAI Shih-Chao’s unique artistic vocabulary.
