CHEN Yen-Ming’s works are filled with passionate and brilliant colors. The creative inspiration for the Appreciation of Night Blooms and in Banana Plantations is based upon the low birth-rate crisis in modern societies that threatens the continuation of economic, cultural, traditional, and religious values as well as the lack of a sustainable future generation to support the entire population. In the work, a baby is placed in the center of the figure surrounded by plant totems, conveying the mutual dependence that exists between individuals, between parents and children, and between the land and culture. Through this work, CHEN Yen-Ming promotes the importance of biological propagation and cultural heritage, saturating the work with Taiwanese cultural icons and local plants to commemorate the abundance of life and convey his spiritual anxiety on our impending cultural extinction.
