LEE Yein-Shyang has traveled to France to study art, and introduced avant-garde European and American artistic styles into Taiwan after returning to the country. LEE Yein-Shyang experimented with combining intaglio and monoprint techniques to create a new trend in Taiwanese print artworks. Summer Rain is inspired by a sudden summer torrent. The work depicts a small river bank, using grayish black as the basic tone that represents the damp humidity of rainy days. Dark and hazy light shrouds the entire composition, while criss-crossing rain drops and diffracted rays add to the ethereal beauty of the natural scenery with the powerful yet short-lived rain raking at the verdant branches. In order to add to the chaos of rainy days, irregularly-shaped white-colored blocks are interspersed throughout the canvas to generate lively and elegant lines. The work is endowed with powerful visual languages that seems to echo the splattering rain in the surroundings.
