To TSAI Xing-Juan, artistic creation is a continuous process of self-contemplation and self-realization. The artist attempts to convey her personal self and reflect upon her tumultuous emotions by integrating inner memories and feelings with various graphic elements, hoping that the drawing process would provide her with a breathing space in which she could contemplate, express, understand, and sastify herself. Portrayal is a conclusion reached by the artist on her physical state. The figure at the lower left corner depicts her emotional state at the moment the drawing was made, while the goldfishes swimming across the canvas represent her unpleasant experiences and feelings. The giraffe poking its head from the right of the picture represents the artist observing herself form a third person’s perspective. By combining these elements, TSAI Xing-Juan has successfully transformed artistic creation processes into an inner dialog, the contents of which are converted into visual forms that she have decided to share with the viewers.
