LAY Jau-Shiuh’s Affection is a photograph that depicts a rectangular window frame, a lonely umbrella, and a streamlined roof of a car vertically aligned to distend the overall visual effects. A black and mottled wall dominates the entire space. Light is directed at the window diagonally, reflecting a man with his back turned towards the viewer, adding a unique twist to the window scene. A bright peach-pink umbrella decorated with frills and colorful patterns stands alone underneath the window. From the color and patterns of the umbrella, viewers could guess that the umbrella holder is a girl, waiting for the man at the window to turn around. Yet the man meekly refuses to turn, demonstrating his refusal. LAY Jau-Shiuh used strong contrasting colors and clever photographic angles to portray the confusing and ambiguous nature of emotional relationships.
