CHEN Yun-Ju focuses upon integrating visual imagery, sound, and interactive devices. Spring Up II – Coexistence provides audio devices set upon two round pedestals loaded with numerous motors and mechanical components. Each of these devices bears a reflective surface and behaves like tiny organisms that bear the same DNA and vitality. These organisms are extremely shy and sensitive. When the surroundings quiet down, they would start to raise their heads and emerge from their hiding places. Upon hearing any sound, however, these organisms would quickly tuck themselves away. CHEN Yun-Ju has derived this creative inspiration from natural forests. Human presence or intervention often sends animals into hiding. Once things quiet down, these animals would emerge once more and continue to move about. CHEN Yun-Ju has used this sound-based interactive installation art in order to explore how human presence changes and influences the surroundings, hoping to create a meaningful dialog between the viewer, the environment, and the artistic space.
