The theme of HUANG Yun-Hsiang’s Typhoon Morakot is based on the 2008 Typhoon Morakot that hit Taiwan. The painting illustrates what he saw at Linkou Power Plant when the typhoon was about to hit Taiwan. The bottom part of the picture illustrated houses, factories, bridges, and chimneys, while the sky is illuminated by the fiery red rays emanated by the setting sun. The brilliant scene is breathtaking, yet serves as a harbinger of the terrible destruction to come. In this work, HUANG Yun-Hsiang has utilized many types of media, using light and transient nature of watercolor, the brightness and brilliance of acrylic paint, and the unique heaviness of oil paints to capture the ephemeral nature of clouds and accurately recreate the period of dreadful calm that heralds the coming storm.
